Central Park, in the centre of Manhattan, is the United States' most popular urban park.
About 25 million visitors tour the Park's 770 acres of parkland, lakes and gardens every year. It opened in 1857, and was expanded and improved by Calvert Vaux and Frederick Law Olmsted in the Greensward Plan, which culminated in 1873. In 1963, it became a U.S. National Historic Landmark. Visitors are advised to start their tour at the Park's southern end, at the corner of 59th and 5th Avenue. Horse-drawn carriages are available there, and a 30-minute ride costs around $35.00 to $40.00, plus a tip.
In winter, the Wollman ice rink is a good place to visit, and at night Tavern on the Green is spectacularly illuminated. For families with children, Central Park Zoo offers great fun and sightseeing, and The Boathouse is the best place to stop for a drink before climbing up Belvedere Castle to admire the view. For those who enjoy the outdoors and hiking, Central Park is an ideal place to wander around and relax.
