Ellis Island is a tribute to the millions of Europeans who sought independence in America.
Roughly 12 million third-class and steerage steamship passengers entered the United States through Ellis Island from 1892 until 1954. All immigrants entering the US via New York's port were medically and legally processed at the Island, which was turned into a museum in 1990 in order to educate visitors about the experiences of the immigrants. Visitors can admire a stunning vista of Lower Manhattan or relax and have a picnic on one of the lawns.
Ellis Island activities include a 30-minute documentary about the immigrants' experience, a free 45-minute guided tour, and an audio tour that costs $8.00. Ellis Island Immigration Museum is free of charge, but visitors must buy a round trip ferry ticket to get there, which costs $12:00 for an adult, $5:00 for a child between 4 and 12 years old, and $10:00 for a senior citizen. The Museum is open every day between 9:30am and 5pm except Christmas Day, and the ferry runs at 40-minute intervals.
