The Metropolitan Museum of Art features over two million artworks, ranging from medieval to modern.
The Met, as it's called colloquially, is on New York City's Museum Mile. Its massive permanent collection includes artworks from Ancient Egypt and classical antiquity, sculptures and paintings by almost all the European masters, and a wide range of modern and American art. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is also home to large collections of Asian, Byzantine, African, Islamic and Oceanic art.
In addition, the Met has extensive compilations of costumes, musical instruments, and ancient armour and weapons from all over the world. The Museum opened in 1872, and its founders intended it to bring art to the American people. It is open Tuesday to Thursday, and on Sunday, from 9:30am to 5:30pm, Friday and Saturday from 9:30am to 9:00pm, and is closed on Monday, except for public holidays. Admission is $20.00 for adults, $15.00 for senior citizens, $10.00 for students, and children younger than 12 are free. The best time to visit is at 9:30am, to beat the rush.
