Reykjavík is the centre of culture and life of the Icelandic people and is also the tourist capital of Iceland. Reykjavík is a city that wasn't built up for tourism, so tourists can get a nice view of tourist things at the same time experiencing how Icelanders live their lives. Travel the subarban neighbourhoods and see all manner of quirky sights from brightly painted homes, murals, rock gardens and tucked away cafes. Renowned for its nightlife Reykjavik is becoming a favourite destination with the younger and slightly more hedonistic crowd, and many a celebrity has been spotted in its clubs and bars. Dont go out too early though as Icelanders tend to drink at home (not suprising given the expensive price on booze) until around midnight whe the bars and clubs start to fill. A short drive away is the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal oasis of pools and grottos complete with the special natural clay that is claimed to have health-giving properties.
