Rome tops our list and for good reason. Nicknamed the 'Eternal City' it has been a destination for travellers for more than 2000 years. No city in the world is as beautiful and few are as glamorous. Split in two by the the river Tiber, Rome has the Vatican (the smallest country in the world) and the Sistine Chapel (with its famous Michelangelo ceiling) on one side, and on the other side lie most of the classical ruins and the seven hills of Rome. The Colosseum has undergone a recent rennovation and once again is hosting performances, not the gladiatorial type but the venue for Rome's free summer rock concerts. Overlooking the Colosseum is the Capitoline Hill with its breathtaking centerpiece the piazza del Campidoglio, designed by Michelangelo this is a perfect spot to contemplate this great city. Come for the renaissance art and architecture, the classical ruins the glamorous Roman people and above all, come for the food.
